g-floor hits the spot

I'm known for having a bit of a pottymouth but this time it's literal, in that we're talking LITTERBOXES today.

We are hashtag blessed to have two different automated litterboxes. one is the litter robot and the other is a pura max from petkit. i would be happy to share our experiences one day here if you’re interested in such a topic.

one thing they both have in common?

THEY'RE MESSY.

The clay litter we use in them gets everywhere... and there is no stopping our elderly, wonderful cats from doing their business halfway in the litterbox at least twice a week.

If you have been following along for a while you know we refinished the ... rustic ... hardwood floors in our 100-plus-year-old home. of course, we want to SEE the floors we worked so hard in, but we also need to PROTECT them from the aforementioned cat messes.

I did some research on the good old internet and found g-floor

Suffice it to say that it did the trick. here’s how it worked.

adventuring equipment:

  • G-floor of choice (we used clear ceramic)

  • measuring tape

  • marker

  • paper to make a floor template, if desired

  • scissors

red scissors lay halfway through cutting a clear vinyl floor covering.

Step 1: measure twice

  • Measure the area your floor will cover. Since we wanted coverage on the baseboards against the back of the closet, too, we added a few inches for the g-floor to curl up against it and save it from cat splashes.

  • if the area you’re covering is a tricky shape (e.g. not square) i recommend you take the extra step of transferring those measurements onto paper. We have this giant roll of brown package paper which works very well for this purpose.

  • Cut your template.

If anyone has tips on how to avoid getting marker all over your hand please let me know. This happens every time I use a marker, no matter the purpose, marker type or usage duration. I digress.

Step 2: Cut once (and lay the floor)

  • Secure the template. Since I wasn’t worried about exact measurements (I had a couple pipes to go around that I knew I wouldn’t hit exactly (because the flooring itself did not go around them exactly - sigh), I just held the paper to the G-floor with one hand and cut with the other. I would recommend taping the template down instead.

  • Cut around your template. Go bigger if you’re unsure of the exact fit so you can trim it back – obviously, adding G-floor will be more difficult than trimming a bigger piece to fit precisely. Also, go around the outside lines first and then get little details second as it will be easier to manage when it’s cut free from the roll. And yes, you can just use scissors. You can even glide scissors through G-floor. It’s tremendous. I literally had no issues cutting this with regular scissors. Incredible, incredible, love it, etc.

  • Check the fit of your G-floor and adjust as needed. G-floor is nonadhesive. it just lays there like a magic trick. ENJOY!!!!

IMPORTANT NOTE: on the right we realized we have an asbestos-wrapped pipe. yikes! in all old homes, it’s so important to get this stuff examined and fixed - we will be investigating asap thanks to the kind ig commenter who shared this info with us!

Unboxing and storage notes:

  • G-floor smells like vinyl, because it is vinyl. Just be aware before you waft it around the house.

  • Mine came in a long paper tube that was a little tricky to open - but the floor covering itself was wrapped in lots of plastic so I didn’t need to be as careful as I was being.

  • I am storing the excess G-floor upright until I get one of those construction paper caddies that we had in elementary school (I can’t wait) for all my random rolls of paper and crafting material.

that’s a wrap! tag us if you try it out @trendprescient on IG or twitter.

you can keep your floor safe from litterboxes and maintain the look of your space at the same time by using clear polyvinyl floor covering from g-floor.
