show off what you love
displaying your nerddom and retaining a sense of style are not mutually exclusive. this is one of my core design tenets.
i hate the stereotype of gamers living in mom's basement. nothing against a parent's basement... that's a sweet gig if it makes sense for you, or maybe you’re helping them through old age - look, i’m not here to judge.
those of us who have moved on to our own homes, enjoying the luxuries and pains that come with rent and mortgage payments, often succumb to minimalism, sleek designs, and the latest home trends to try and prove to themselves they’ve made it. if minimalism is your thing, more power to you. it is most definitely not mine. i like my house to look lived in, to reflect things i like, to respect but not be beholden to the dreaded “resale value” conversation. look, not everything has to be agreeable gray, okay?
and here’s an even bigger revelation: we do not have to hide away our love of the nerdy, my friends!
here are some tips for wearing your heart on your sleeve, so to speak, and incorporating your passions into your interior decor:
get cool art about the game you love. for example, yesterday's uncharted quote is framed on my wall (we got a special edition of the game that included this on a lil poster). we also have portraits of the @crticialrole campaign two characters done in the style of classic works of art (these beauties are by ARTIST NAME). when you can get meaningful artwork AND support an independent creator, it's a win win.
frame it like you love it. i find most of my frames on sale at arts and crafts stores, vintage stores, or online. it's VERY easy to customize them - just grab a can of spraypaint and completely change the look of the frame. you can find metallic, textured, matte, and many color varities. or grab a brush, get fancy, and try painting a marble design or other texture.
mix it up with statement art and gallery walls. i love a gallery wall. but sometimes a piece needs room to breathe. we feature mollymauk in our parlor, in a place of honor above the fireplace. other characters and easter eggs are part of our gallery wall in the living room, and our stairway gallery from the first to second floor. depending on the size of the picture and the size of the love in your heart for the IP, mix it up in your own home too.
