Giving an old painting new life

art

Many of you know I love video games and painting.

A while ago I had the idea to create classical style paintings but featuring video game characters instead of the usual subjects. My first one was Kuja, the villian from Final Fantasy IX (also my first FF game), posing as Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres' La Grande Odalisque.

I had started this a LONG time ago as an oil painting, and wanted to finish it... but I knew I didn’t have a ton of time to paint, and I wasn’t feeling the oil painting route. It’s been years since I picked up an IRL tube of oil paint, and while I’ll definitely do it again, I wasn’t sure that was the medium speaking to me right now. (Not to mention, it’s a huge mess and wreaks havoc on your drains!)

I was in a good spot with digital painting, though. So, I thought... why not try sprucing it up in Procreate? I took a picture of the actual painting and then uploaded into Procreate where I fiddled with layers, cutting and pasting, and re-painting whole sections. The digital oil brush felt surprisingly like I remembered the real thing behaving. Not exact, but close enough to find my groove.
